HOSPITAL ACQUIRED CONDITIONS
After October 1, 2008 Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC) will be monitored to determine if they were Present on Admission (POA) or not.
For IPPS hospitals those conditions that are HAC will no longer
receive additional payment for cases in which one of
the selected conditions was not present on admission.
That is, the case would be paid as though the secondary diagnosis were not present.
Medicare is requiring a greater degree of precision in
reporting diagnosis with the objective of reducing
Potentially Preventable Complications (PPC) and justifying
pay for performance mechanisms which have long been the model for good health care and fair reimbursements.
